MONTEZUMA — They call themselves Unknown, and they love to rock 'n' roll.
Four Montezuma high school boys have joined forces and started a local garage band.
“It’s a blast,” said Isaiah Wilson, who plays guitar in the band.
Wilson, a ninth grader at Montezuma High School, is joined in the band by Ethan Desrochers on vocals, Easton Hudnut on drums and Evan Haughery on bass.
Desrochers is a ninth grader and Hudnut and Haughey are both in tenth grade.
The four boys are part of the Montezuma Pep Band and have been playing together for several years. About three years ago they talked about forming a band, but nothing came off the idea.
That all changed this school year when the four boys started practicing and playing together.
They put their heads together to come up with a band name.
“They couldn’t come up with a name, so they call themselves Unknown, said Dana Desrochers, Ethan’s mother. “They even had T-shirts made that say ‘Unknown.’”
The band has been practicing in the Montezuma Band room over the lunch hour and meeting at the school on Sundays after church to practice their craft. They have also been meeting in the different band member’s homes to practice.
They play rock 'n' roll and heavy metal and are writing some of their own songs. Wilson has a recording area set up in his basement using a laptop, and the band is hoping to start laying down some tracks soon.
“The whole band is writing songs together,” said Wilson when asked.
“They are a group of talented and smart kids,” said Dana.
The band plays “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters; “Say It Ain’t So,” by Weezer; “Animal I have Become,” by Three Days Grace; “Shepherd of Fire” by Avenged Sevenfold, and “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by the popular 70s band, Twisted Sister.
And toss in some of the Montezuma Pep Band favorite such as “Eruption” by Van Halen; “Crazy Train” by Ozzy; and “Enter Sandman” by Metallica and the band is off to a good start.
The boys will perform live at Montezuma’s Summer Nights on the Courthouse Square June 19. They will also be performing a couple songs at the Montezuma Variety Show March 22 at 7 p.m.
And once the band is more established, it plans to perform at the Longhorn Saloon in neighboring Barnes City.
“It’s been so fun to witness Easton, Isaiah, Ethan and Evan form their music group,” said Montezuma Band teacher Carri Burnett. “I call them the Lunch Bunch since they practice every day during lunch.
“But seriously, I am so proud of their dedication to their music and to each other. I’m excited to see everything they accomplish together.”
“It’s really fun,” said Haughey. “It’s only going to get better.”
“Big things are coming,” said Hudnut.
“It’s going to be great,” added Desrochers. “We are the future of music.”
