Veterans receive Quilts of Valor

WILLIAMSBURG — Three Iowa County Veterans received Quilts of Valor March 26 at the American Legion in Williamsburg.
Delbert Clubine
Lt. Col. Delbert E. Clubine of Williamsburg was born Oct. 14, 1943 in Waterloo. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Feb. 18, 1966 and received basic and advanced training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
Clubine was not deployed to Vietnam, but he served 28 ½ years and retired from the Army and Reserves in October 1995 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Clubine served as LN officer, rifle platoon leader signal platoon, CCO of 404th Signal Company, signal officer of the 394th Battalion, signal maintenance of the 103rd Coscom and 3D COSCOM maintenance officer.
Clubine received several medals and certificates of achievement. He completed the Iowa Military Academy, Signal Basic Course, Signal Officers Advanced Course in August 1975, Command General Staff College in November 1983; Logistics Management College in October 1987; Ordinance Center School, Aberdeen Proving Ground in September 1998 and Army War College National Security Issues Seminar in April 1968.
Clubine worked with youth counselors as parish chairman. He worked on three two-week mission trips to Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
Clubine enjoys biking and is a member of senior biking club “Folks on Spokes” in Orange Beach from December through March. In Iowa he bikes regularly with 6-10 people.
Clubine worked for Chamberlain Mfg. research and development, a defense contractor, as industrial engineer and later as quality manager.
The last 18 years before retiring, Clubine worked for Advance Heat Treatment as director of quality and for General Dynamics. His wife of 54 years, Jan, passed away in 2020.
Clubine said he was proud to receive a quilt from the Williamsburg group.
Bethany Cheney
Bethany N. Cheney, of Victor, was born Oct. 16, 1983 in Marengo and was inducted into the U.S. Army in February of 2002 in Cedar Rapids. She received basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and advanced individual training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.
Cheney returned from training when her unit was being deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Cheney had to stay behind.
Cheney trained in supply to help issue supplies to soldiers. She helped the armory with issuing weapons and made sure that the weapons were clean when returned. She then trained in an S4 unit.
Cheney received the Army Achievement Medal for her service and was discharged June 2006.
Cheney said her experience was the best thing she ever did for herself and she’s never regretted it.
Cheney is married, has three children and works as a massage therapist in Williamsburg. Cheney also owns and operates a part-time leaning service.
Guy Adams
Guy Laverne Adams was born Sept. 3, 1950 in Bemidji, Minnesota. He was a track star in high school and received medals with the 50-yard and 100-yard relay teams.
Adams was inducted into the U.S. Army Aug. 13, 1969 in Des Moines. He received basic training in St. Louis, Missouri and engineer lineman training at Fort Lewis in Washington.
He later served with Company B of the 224th Engineer Battalion in Davenport.
Adams was deployed to Vietnam Aug. 15, 1970, returning in August of 1971. He was awarded a Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, a Vietnam Service medal and a Marksmanship M-14 qualification badge.
Adams was honorably discharged July 10, 1978. Since returning to Iowa, he has worked at Amana Farms, painted for Mike Beasley, cooked at Hometown Café in Millersburg and at Butch’s Café in North English.
Adams enjoys NASCAR, fishing and building and flying model airplanes. He makes his home in Millersburg.
Adams has four children, Aaron, Brant, Tonya and Cody and a nephew, Bryce.
Adams said the quilt he received says thank you in a way that words cannot.
