BROOKLYN — BGM senior Karagyn Minnaert had one word to describe the vibes for the BGM softball team so far this season.
“Amazing,” she said.
On Thursday, the Bears defeated Sigourney 3-2.
The win had some extra meaning for several reasons.
Outside of a forfeit, it was the first loss handed to Sigourney in more than two and a half seasons of conference play.
Second, it was the first win for the BGM program against Sigourney since 2011. A win 14 years in the making.
“It was honestly a huge win team effort-wise,” Minnaert said. “All of us came to play. All of us were ready, and all of us wanted it.”
“We have such a great bond. We play so well together, and we have all grown up together playing softball. We want to be here and be with each other.”
Those good vibes carried into Friday, as BGM defeated Iowa Valley 6-3.
The Tigers made them work for it though, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Skyler Hoyt and Michaela Schachtlie drove in runs for the Tigers.
Minnaert drove in a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1.
The Bears did the rest of their damage in the game in the fifth, scoring five runs to take the lead.
Kylie Arment and Cara Arment both drove in runs, Kylie Arment on a sacrifice fly and Cara Arment on a 2-RBI single.
The Tigers added one more run in the seventh, but seconds later the game ended on a tag-out at third base. The Tigers had nine hits in the game. BGM had eight.
Cara Arment, for the second-straight night, pitched a complete game. Arment had nine strikeouts Friday.
It was Cara Arment’s 12th win in her freshman season.
“I feel very supported by the other girls,“ Cara Arment said. ”Being a pitcher, you need a lot of encouragement, so that helps a lot.“
BGM moved to 13-4 following the win Friday.
“[The] goal is to keep going and keep winning,” said Minnaert.
“Just have fun and keep playing how we are,” Cara Arment said.
Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel reached the 400 career strikeouts milestone in the game in her 4 1/3 innings on the mound.
Kriegel is now the school record holder and will continue to rewrite that record the rest of the season.
Earlier in the week against Colfax-Mingo, Kriegel broke the single-game strikeout record with 16.
