Voters approve funding for Belle Plaine school additions

VINTON — Belle Plaine’s school bond issue, seeking up to $7.95 million for additions to the elementary and high schools, passed during the Nov. 4 election.
Voters in Iowa, Benton, Tama and Poweshiek Counties cast 464 votes in favor and 209 votes against the measure, close to 70% approval.
Valerie Coffman and Scott E. Frank were elected to the Belle Plaine school board’s at-large seats, and Andrew Neuhaus was elected director at-large to fill a vacancy. All were unopposed.
Mitch Malcolm ran unopposed for Belle Plaine’s city council at large. He received 428 votes. No candidate filed for Ward 1. Eighteen write-in votes were cast.
Judy Schlesselman received 129 of 134 votes counted for the Belle Plaine Ward 3 seat. Michael Stull ran unopposed for park commissioner and received 426 votes.
Garret Landuyt received 76.34% of the vote for mayor to fill a vacancy after the resignation of Lyle Morrow. He received 313 votes,; 97 ballots were cast for write-in candidates.
Brian Cruise was elected mayor of Atkins with 313 votes.
Three city council seats were up for grabs, and three candidates were on the ballot. Jeremy M. Rolando received 253 votes, Kevin DeMeulenaere, 236 and Bob Stolen, 279.
No candidates filed for Blairstown mayor; 35 write-in votes were cast.
Brian Hagen received 44.96% of the vote for Blairstown city council. Write-in votes accounted for 71 of the total 129 votes counted.
Twenty-four write-in votes were cast for city council to fill a vacancy after no candidate filed.
Garrett D. Flickinger received 37 of 45 votes for mayor of Garrison.
The three candidates on the ballot won three open Garrison city council seats. Allan Lindsey received 40 votes, Tina Rommann, 43 votes and Robert Deecker, 38.
Kevin Rohrer received 71 of 72 votes for mayor of Keystone. Kathy Janss, Dave Monson, and Jeffrey Bruns will fill the three open city council seats, having received 56, 56 and 66 votes respectively; Mary K. Hennings received 43 votes.
Joel Buttikofer received all 25 of the votes counted for Luzerne mayor. All five candidates for city council — Barbara Shields, Hannah Daniels, Shane Daniels, Kelly W. Kendall and Kyla Buttkofer — were elected, garnering between 18 and 24 votes,
Austin Brase received 39 of 44 votes to become mayor of Mount Auburn. Tiffanie Butler, Cody Lundry and David McGarvey were elected to three of five open city council seats with more than 40 votes each.
Doug Boddicker was elected mayor of Newhall, receiving 174 votes. Mark Lnenicka received 46.
The five Newhall City Council seats went to Ben Seeck, with 156 votes; Rachelle Messner, 143 votes; Douglas Rinderknecht, with 130; Kurt Slouha, with 125 and Bruce Cross, with 124.
Deborah Vaughan received 90, and Mart Campbell received 123.
No candidates filed for election in Norway for mayor or city council.
Shadoe Vogt won the mayoral election in Shellsburg with 159 votes. Phillip Travis received 107.
In the city council race, Rockford Lee Lubbock received 178 votes, Cody Risdal, 155 and Jamie Howard, 141 to take the three open city council seats. Sharon Harvey received 120 votes and Nicole Crawford, 86.
Bob Irelan won the mayoral race in Urbana with 231 votes. James Warnke received 222.
The two Urbana city council seats went to Shane Light, with 240 votes and Randy Johnson, with 228. Carman Irelan received 182 votes and Corey Schroeder, 199.
Pat Gorkow took 72 of 85 votes to become mayor of Van Horne.
Jim Parmenter, Amy L. Knaack and Kimberly Fisher were all elected to the three Van Horne city council seats up for grabs.
Bud Maynard received 246 of 260 votes to become mayor of Vinton.
Dakoda Sellers ran unopposed for Vinton city council at-large. Also unopposed were Ron Hessenius in District 1, Zach Parmater in District 3 and Wesley Recker in District 4 in fill a vacancy.
Randy Bauer garnered 157 votes to become Walford mayor. Russell Hebert received 26 votes.
The two city council seats were won by Amy Ellis, with 125 votes, and Jesse Bergmeier, 133 votes. Sarah Hebert received 54 votes.
Benton Community School District elected Scott W. Shaw, Aric Becker and Nate Klein to the school board. All ran unopposed.
Vinton-Shellsburg School District elected Jennifer Ann Birker, Rachel Wayson and Kimberly Schirm to the school board. They were the only candidates named on ballots.
