VICTOR — The HLC-TC boys’ basketball team went 5-16 last season in a rebuilding year. The team returned only two starters from the 2022-23 team that went 12-12.
The Warriors were defeated in the first round of the postseason by Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
Second team all-conference honoree Peyton Roth returns for the Warriors this season.
Roth was second in the South Iowa Cedar League West in scoring last season, averaging 21.3 points per game. Roth also hit 73 three-pointers.
Devon Weisskopf is the team’s other returning starter. He was second on the team in rebounds last season.
HLV and Tri-County began to share sports teams last year, and the Warriors will reap the benefits of that this season.
Levi Molyneux and Sean McCullough come to HLV as the leading scorers from the Trojans squad last season.
“With the addition of Tri-County, I feel that we have the talent and ability to get back to where we were two years ago,” HLV-TC head coach Shawn Welsh said.
“Levi and Sean will add to our backcourt.”
A newcomer to watch will be Tucker Donaldson, who moved into the school district this year.
“He will bring us an all-around presence on both ends of the floor,” Welsh said.
The Warrors will scrimmage Winfield Mt. Union at the English Valleys Jamboree Nov. 25 and will kick off their season Dec. 2 at English Valleys.
The next day, the Warriors will travel to Colfax-Mingo.
“With all of these additions to the mix with what we return, the potential is there for a good season,” Welsh said. “ These guys had the chance to play together this summer and were able to mesh very well.”
