BROOKLYN — Chaotic would be a good way to describe the last three minutes of the fourth quarter in this South Iowa Cedar League battle Friday night.
BGM led 46-33, but the HLV-TC boys’ basketball team rallied to tie things up and win in overtime.
It wasn’t a clean game from either team — both teams made a lot of turnovers. But the Warriors found their way late in the game.
“It was about playing with heart,” HLV-TC coach Shawn Welsh said. “I challenged them at halftime. In the third quarter we still hadn’t found it, but we finally started making some buckets and were able to set up some pressure and force some turnovers (in the fourth).”
Turnovers were the key in the late comeback. The Bears’ only two points late in the fourth came at the free-throw line in the final minutes.
Both teams’ offenses looked good in the first.
The Bears trailed 11-5 before Keaton Kriegel hit three three-pointers off the bench The score was tied at 16 after a quarter.
The Bears’ leading scorer, Beau Burns, was out with an injury in the game.
After two scoreless minutes in the second, the Bears took control of the quarter.
The Bears showed their defensive intensity; the Warriors scored only four points in the quarter.
Maddox Rhoads scored five straight to give the Bears a seven-point lead, which remained at half in a 27-20 score.
The Bears doubled their lead by the end of the third, hitting two more threes in the quarter.
A Cole Mumm layup made the lead double-digits, and the Bears went on an 8-0 run, pushing the lead to 17.
Peyton Roth scored three points for the Warriors to close out the quarter at 41-27 Bears.
For the first half of the fourth quarter, the lead did not budge much.
With under three minutes remaining, the Warriors finally broke through.
The run started with a Levi Molyneux layup that cut the lead to 11.
A Roth layup and two free throws from Tucker Donaldson dropped the lead to seven.
In a blink, the lead was four, and then Molyneux hit arguably the biggest shot of the night, draining a three to cut the lead to one with 56 seconds remaining.
“We finally got something where we drove and they collapsed and we had that open three,” Welsh said. “Earlier in the game we were settling for contested shots.”
Down two with 18 seconds, the Bears went 1-2 at the line to take a 48-46 lead.
Roth drove to the paint and connected on a layup to force overtime.
Devon Weisskopf scored four of his seven points in the extra period as the Warriors seized control early, outscoring the Bears 8-3 for the 56-51 victory.
The Bears, without their leading scorer, had balanced scoring across the board.
Kriegel led with 13, and Robby Tometich was also in double figures with 10.
A four-game week awaits the Bears next week, and with the effort displayed Friday night, odds are they’ll get their first win of the season.
Roth led the Warriors with 23.
