A three-game losing streak is over for the HLV baseball team after they survived a 13-inning marathon against BGM Friday night, June 16, at Brooklyn, 10-3.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the Bears put up runs in the third and fifth innings to draw even, 2-2. Both teams scored in the sixth inning to make it 3-3 and it stayed that way until the top of the 13th inning when HLV erupted for seven runs.
Junior Boston York, the third pitcher of the night for the Warriors, then retired the Bears in order in the bottom of the inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced, to preserve the win.
Max Henstorf started the game on the mound and allowed two runs on six hits in 5-2/3 innings. He struck out five. Keegan Gorsh relieved him and worked the next 6-1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits. He struck out three.
With BGM’s pitching staff surrendering 18 hits, HLV had ample opportunities to end the game earlier, but couldn’t deliver the timely hit when needed and left numerous base runners stranded.
York, Cole Fontinel and Bryer Jack collected three hits apiece for the Warriors. Fontinel drove in three runs and York and Jack one each.
Henstorf, Camden Kennebeck and Brody Sternhagen all had two hits. One of Kennebeck’s hits was a double, and he and Jack drove in runs. Keegan Gorsh added an RBI single and Kyler Gorsh singled and scored twice.
The win avenged a 7-6 loss to BGM back on May 15, improving HLV’s record to 4-7. The Bears fell to 6-9.
BELLE PLAINE
The Warriors were shutout by the Plainsmen 10-0 Wednesday, June 14, at Belle Plaine.
HLV was held to four hits, all singles, and struck out nine times against Plainsmen pitcher Kenton Parrott.
While Parrott dominated, Warrior hurlers Camden Kennebeck and Keegan Gorsh struggled to throw strikes, issuing seven walks and hitting three batters between them. Kennebeck took the loss.
SIGOURNEY
The Warriors suffered a 9-5 loss to the Savage Cobras Monday, June 12, at Sigourney.
HLV out hit the hosts 8-7, but didn’t get enough timely hits leaving several base runners stranded.
Henstorf and Fontinel each went 2-for-3 at the plate with one of Henstorf’s base hits driving in a run. Jack singled to drive in two runs and Keegan Gorsh added an RBI hit.
Peyton Roth was the losing pitcher, giving up all nine runs — six earned, in 5-1/3 innings. He walked six and struck out two.
