OSKALOOSA — The best victories are often the ones that aren’t expected.
That was the case for the HLV-TC boys golf team Monday at the South Iowa Cedar League meet at Oskaloosa Public Golf.
The Warriors captured the team title by one stroke over Sigourney, with a score of 335 on the true 18-hole course.
“We weren’t expected to win, but we showed up, and anything can happen,” HLV-TC senior Levi Molyneux said.
Coming into the meet, the Warriors were ranked fifth in the conference in nine-hole average and fourth in 18-hole average.
The race was tight down the stretch as the last few groupings finished. Those final groupings included three of the Warriors’ four scorers.
The Warriors needed to play one over par or better over their final few holes, and they did exactly that. It all came down to Devon Weisskopf, who needed a bogey or better on his final hole, and the Warriors’ senior delivered.
“Coach said, toward the last four holes, to play for the team, and I took that and told myself I need to stop playing for me,” Molyneux said.
Molyneux finished with four pars to help keep the Warriors’ two-stroke lead late.
The Warriors swept the titles on the day as Peyton Roth defended his individual title from last season, shooting a 75 on the par-72.
“It feels really good,” Roth said. “There were strokes I left out there today, but in the end I was glad I got the win.”
Roth birdied his last hole of the day.
Freshman Lance Milton also earned honors, finishing seventh.
“The kids played exceptionally well today,” HLV-TC coach Cory Lahndorf said with the conference trophy in hand. “I told them they got nothing to lose.”
“I knew all along they had a shot, and as the tournament progressed, they realized they had a shot at it too.”
The Warriors hope to take the momentum into sectionals, on their home course, in which they will see many of the same teams as today.
“Our sectionals is very tough, but today showed we can play with them and beat them,” Lahndorf said. “This proved we can play with anybody when we play for each other,” Roth added.
English Valleys’ Gage Heyne earned his highest conference finish, coming in third overall with a 78.
“I felt pretty consistent throughout, just staying focused and trying to get up and down,” Heyne said.
As a two-sport spring season athlete, a busy next few weeks await the Bears’ senior.
“Sleep is going to be important,” said Heyne of his upcoming schedule.
BGM finished fourth as a team.
Ethan Bridgewater was set to be the conference champion after finishing with a 74 after a two-stroke penalty. The coaches’ committee, however, decided that a rules violation warranted Bridgewater’s disqualification.
BGM has shot a team score of 315 through 18-holes this season and will look to bounce back as they host sectionals on their home course next Wednesday, May 14.
Montezuma finished seventh, Iowa Valley eighth, English Valleys ninth and Belle Plaine 10th as a team in the meet.
