NORTH ENGLISH — A resurfacing project on Washington Street in North English is expected to begin this month, according to North English Mayor Dan Strohman.
“We started on it a year or so ago,” said Strohman. The road is considered a farm-to-market road, so the city got some help from the DOT for the project, said Strohman.
The city had to get 28E agreements in order before the project could begin. “It took longer than we thought,” said Strohman.
The project will consist of resurfacing Washington Street from the west to east corporate limits. The project will cost about $697,326, according to the agreement between Iowa County and the City of North English.
An estimated 80%, or $557,860, will be paid for with a federal-aid surface transportation block swap grant. The remaining estimated total of $139,465 will be shared by Iowa County (9%) and the City of North English (91%).
Iowa County will pay an estimated $12,551 and will maintain the roadway outside the city limits after construction is finished, according to its agreement with North English.
The City of North English will pay about $126,913, will design the project and pay construction engineering cost. The city will maintain the portion of the roadway within the city limits after the project is finished.
“The [county] actually own[s] the section from Knoll Ridge [County Club] out to where the cement starts,” Strohman said.
The project consists of laying asphalt on the road from the east city limits to where concrete pavement begins west of town, said Strohman.
North English awarded the contract for resurfacing to Pelling.
“We’re trying to get the cement street patches done first,” said Strohman.
Once the project begins, it will take about 30 days to complete, he said. He hopes the project will begin by Sept. 15.
“Hopefully next year we’re going to do Main Street.”
