Watoto Children’s Choir to visit Iowa
Aug. 28, 2024 4:32 pm
KALONA — Churches of the Mid-Prairie District will host the Watoto Children’s Choir Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Hillcrest Academy’s Celebration Hall from 7-8:15 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be taken.
Hillcrest Academy is located at 1421 540th St. SW in Kalona.
Watoto, a Christ-centered ministry based in Uganda, East Africa, will perform songs from its new album, “Better Days — There Is Hope,” according to a press release.
This six-month U.S. tour tells the story of orphaned and abandoned African children who, through love and care, have risen above their circumstances and are now poised to become Africa’s future leaders.
Founded in 1984 during a time of civil unrest, Watoto established a local church in Kampala, Uganda, to bring hope and life to the nation.
Since then, Watoto has rescued thousands of orphaned and abandoned children. More than 100 children’s choirs have toured six continents, the press release said.
Since 1994, the choirs have performed for the President of the United States, met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and visited almost every major parliament in the world.
The proceeds from the album will help Watoto provide education, medical and a safe home to vulnerable children.
The production itself mirrors Africa’s vibrant and colorful essence, taking the audience on an emotional journey as the children sing, dance and share their personal stories, the press release says.
