It was a successful home debut to the 2023 season for the Williamsburg boys’ soccer team Thursday, March 30, as they defeated Mid-Prairie, 6-1.
Senior Braeden Browen and sophomore Mason Eggelston both pulled off a hat-trick, scoring three goals and contributing one assist apiece to lead coach Ryan Sauser’s Raiders.
Williamsburg goalie Seth Rethwisch played all 80 minutes, allowing a late goal to the Golden Hawks and collecting five saves. Halftime score was 4-0.
The win evened the Raiders’ record at 1-1, two days after opening the season Tuesday, March 28, with a 2-1 overtime loss at Fort Madison.
Williamsburg had five more shots on goal than the Bloodhounds, 9-4, but scored just once off the foot of Brown. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Rethwisch had 11 saves and held Fort Madison scoreless for 65 of the 80 minutes he logged as the Raiders’ goalie.
Williamsburg’s girls’ soccer team also opened the season last week, losing 2-0 Tuesday, March 28, at Newton
