MARENGO — Coming into Thursday’s South Iowa Cedar League boys wrestling quad at Iowa Valley, one match stood out from the rest.
HLV-TC’s Cael Weisskopf versus Iowa Valley’s Chance Hoyt.
The preseason top-10 matchup of Class 1A 157-pounders delivered all one could hope for in a season-opening matchup of two of the state’s best.
Weisskopf was defeated by Chance Hoyt in all of their matches last season, but the Warriors’ junior put together a 10-point third period to come away with a 14-10 win by decision Thursday.
Chance Hoyt held a 4-2 lead after a period after getting a takedown and a escape.
Weisskopf chose down to start the second.
“I chose down since I needed to get that escape point,” Weisskopf said. “He’s really good on top, but I had to find a way, and I was able to get another reversal.”
Chance Hoyt added another takedown and led 8-4 heading into the final period. Weisskopf knew what he needed to do to get the job done — two takedowns.
Weisskopf did that and nearly came away with the pin at the end, adding four nearfall points to clinch the win.
“We came in the end in a scramble, and I was able to catch him in a cradle, which I held onto until the end,” Weisskopf said.
The win certainly gave Weisskopf some confidence that he can compete with the best in his class to start the season.
“Credit to him, he’s a hell of a wrestler and absolutely deserved to medal last season,” Weisskopf said. “I knew I had to step my game up and work harder, which I’ve done every single day.”
Iowa Valley, ranked ninth as a team in 1A to start the season, won all three of its duals comfortably.
Its two other ranked wrestlers, Mason Hoyt and Nolan Kriegel, went 3-0.
Kriegel won all three matches by fall.
It was also Mason Hoyt’s first action up a weight class at 175.
In his first match, he gave up an early takedown, but won by fall over BGM’s Sully Thompson.
“He was a lot stronger than 165-pounders,” Mason Hoyt said. “I just had to knock the rust off and get in my groove.“
As Mason Hoyt adjusts to a new weight class, he aims to improve in a few areas as the season continues.
“Focusing when I’m down and getting out quicker and faster,” Mason Hoyt said. “Overall, I think I did well (tonight). There’s obviously stuff I could have done better. I just got to keep improving every day.”
The Tigers’ lineup, which nearly fills all 14 weights, has many underclassmen this season. The team hopes to be a regional duals qualifier again this season.
BGM’s lone state qualifier last season, Hunter Hodina, did not make weight at 132. Hodina wrestled up to 144 in two matches, winning both by fall with ease.
Sully Thompson picked up two wins by fall at 175.
HLV-TC had three wrestlers win two matches — Weisskopf, Allan Scott and Bryer Jack. All six wins were bonus-points victories, including five by fall.
For English Valleys, Hunter Offerman was the highlight at 132. Offerman wrestled three matches, including two wins by fall.
In a battle with Iowa Valley’s Brycen Schwabe, Offerman was able to secure a cradle for a pin in the third period.
