Postseason is a time when teams want to be at their best.
That isn't exactly how things have played out for the Williamsburg baseball team.
Losing three more times last week, the Raiders have dropped 13 of their last 16 games and enter tournament play Wednesday with a 17-19 record.
SWEPT BY CLIPPERS
Clear Creek Amana swept Williamsburg in a WaMaC doubleheader Monday, June 26, at Tiffin, 15-3 and 8-7.
Clipper pitchers Josh Loren and Robert Meade held the Raiders to four hits — two of those by Sam Rich — in the opener, walked nobody and struck out eight.
On the other hand, three Williamsburg hurlers gave up eight hits, walked six batters and plunked four more.
The Raiders' pitching staff didn't fare much better in the nightcap, allowing eight more hits and four free passes, three of those by hit batsmen.
Williamsburg did swing the bats better, collecting 11 hits, but left too many base runners stranded.
Gavin Doehrmann, Nile Sinn, Henry Simmons and Gavin Jensen had two hits apiece for the Raiders, with Doehrmann and Sinn each driving in two runs, and Simmons one. Ty Becker added an RBI single.
FALL TO WOLVERINES
Williamsburg lost at home to Dike-New Hartford Wednesday, June 28, 3-1.
The Raiders used an RBI triple by Simmons to take a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, but Dike-New Hartford, aided by two Williamsburg errors, broke up Nile Sinn's shutout, scoring all three of their runs.
Sinn allowed just three hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out three. Rich came in and tossed two innings of one hit relief.
Wolverines pitcher Carson Costello limited the Raiders to five hits and struck out nine in a complete game performance.
TOURNEY TIME
Williamsburg will play East Marshall (12-16) in the Class 2A Region 7 quarterfinals Wednesday, July 5, at Pleasantville. East Marshall beat Des Moines Christian in a first round game last Saturday, 5-3.
