WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg High School hosted its 2nd annual Together We Play Day Thursday.
The event, which aims to provide adaptive students an unique opportunity to connect and be physically active, grew in numbers this year.
A total of 10 schools and 87 total students participated Thursday, with numbers even higher if you include all the volunteers and those helping with the event.
Benton Community, English Valleys, Iowa City Liberty, Mid-Prairie, Montezuma, Mount Vernon, Newton, Solon, Washington and Williamsburg schools attended. Cornell College brought some students who are studying physical education to help with the event.
“I am beyond happy that we were able to do this again,” event director and Williamsburg Adaptive P.E. teacher Mickey Hines said. “More importantly, more schools came and more students got to experience this awesome day and to have fun.”
Students were divided into groups and had a plethora of stations to visit, such as backyard games, basketball, bowling and obstacle course. Both gymnasiums at the high school were needed to contain all the games.
“Adaptive P.E. is something I have a big heart for,” Hines said. “I wanted a day for them to look forward too. I had a student say they’d been counting down the days to this event. That warms my heart to hear.”
The event gave these students an unique and interactive experience.
“That’s why I do it and why I am so passionate about it,” Hines said. “Every year if other schools want to do it, I’ll gladly help.”
