Williamsburg, Montezuma have ranked wins on resume
Bravettes face key matchup against Lynnville-Sully Jan. 13

Every area girls basketball team has played a range of six to nine games so far this season.
Conference races are starting to form and teams are settled into the season. Montezuma remains undefeated in South Iowa Cedar League play, with some key games coming.
The Bravettes, in 1A, and Williamsburg in 3A have been ranked since the start of the season.
Here’s a quick look at each area team so far this season.
SOUTH IOWA CEDAR LEAGUE
Montezuma (6-1, 5-0)
The SICL has already appeared to form a two-team race, and Montezuma is one of those teams. The Bravettes picked up a nice win before break over ranked Keota.
The other potential SICL leader is Lynnville-Sully, which is undefeated so far at 9-0. The two teams will meet Jan. 13 in a matchup that could decide the conference.
Montezuma is averaging 48.7 points per game. Vivian Cook leads the charge with 15.1 per game with a near-conference best 24 three-pointers.
In the post, Sydnee Burgess is averaging over 10 rebounds a game.
The Bravettes’ strength has been their defense. They’ve allowed just one opponent to score more than 50 points this season.
English Valleys (3-3, 3-3)
English Valleys has arguably had the hardest conference schedule of anyone so far and, unfortunately, had to do it without their top player, Ava Gehrking.
Gehrking has been sidelined with an injury, but the Bears are hopeful she will be back heading into the new year.
Anna Luers has stepped up in the scoring department, averaging 15.1 per contest. Addison Achenbach is not far behind with 12.7 per game.
A top-three conference finish is still in reach for the Bears who start the new year Saturday with a game against Danville.
BGM (4-4, 2-4)
BGM is currently on pace to top last season’s win total of eight.
Through seven games, sophomore Ellie English is averaging just over 10 points a game with a team-high 17 three-point shots.
The Bears are a young team; five of their top six scorers are underclassmen.
It’s a tough schedule out of the break for BGM, facing Lynnville-Sully, Keota and Sigourney.
HLV-TC (3-5, 2-4)
HLV-TC has had an offensive resurgence of late.
Through its first five game, the Warriors were averaging 21.8 points per game. In the last three, the average doubled to 43.7.
Fresh off a 29-point performance, Emery Hall paces the Warriors with 13.3 points a contest to go along with 20 steals.
Erilea Kupka has a team-high 15 threes.
Belle Plaine (1-8, 0-6)
Coming off a two-win season, the Plainsmen look improved this season, playing some games more competitively.
Jadie Dahlquist has been the team’s spark on both sides of the ball. The sophomore leads the team in points per game with 8.1, and is third in the conference with 29 steals.
Iowa Valley (0-9, 0-6)
The Tigers are still searching for their first win but are coming off their highest scoring output of the season. with 43.
Myla Frimml has been the focal point for the Tigers, averaging 10.8 points per game to go along with 8.8 rebounds per contest.
WAMAC WEST
Williamsburg (5-2, 2-2)
Through seven games, Williamsburg has already played five ranked teams in Classes 3A-5A. They’ve won three of those contests.
Several more ranked matchups await the Raiders in a competitive WaMaC.
Clear Creek Amana took possession of first in the West division after defeating the Raiders head-to-head before break.
The Raiders have been balanced offensively so far this season.
Through five games, the team’s top six scorers produced between 32 and 45 total points. Zoe Allen led the way with nine points per contest.
