The Iowa Valley Baseball League (IVL) has been around for a while, dating back to 1935, and has provided semipro level baseball in the Iowa Valley.
The league this year has seven teams, and six participate in the weekday Nite League as well.
One of those teams is the Williamsburg Red Sox.
The Red Sox are currently 5-1 in the IVL and 0-2 in the Nite League.
The roster is comprised of mostly Williamsburg and Clear Creek Amana preps, but also has a few other players from outside the area.
One of the notable Williamsburg preps on the team is Trey O’Neil.
O’Neil is coming off his freshman season of baseball at Southeastern Community College.
O’Neil pitched a total of 30 innings with a 3.90 ERA and 5-0 record.
“My freshman year was about everything it could be besides a regional and World Series title,” O’Neil said.
“Our team was really good and had a lot of high level players, and I will be looking to improve on my pitching next year.”
The Blackhawks made it to the NJCAA Division II World Series but lost in an elimination game against East Central Community College.
O’Neil now shifts his focus to helping the Red Sox win and has already contributed to multiple wins with his work on the mound.
“I played in this league after my last two high school seasons, and it was fun, so I figured I would come back since I can stay at home and still play some good baseball,” O’Neil said.
In the main IVL, the Red Sox are off to a hot start with their 5-1 record.
“The season has been good so far and a lot of fun,” O’Neil said.
“It’s been really fun playing with guys I played with in high school and then also meeting guys from the surrounding area.”
The Red Sox next league game is scheduled for this Sunday at home against the Walford Hogs. First pitch at 6:30 p.m.
