WILLIAMSBURG — Mickey Hines is in his third year of teaching at Williamsburg Junior/Senior High School, and as the adaptive P.E. teacher, he has always wanted to have a Unified Sports Day for students.
That goal has now come to fruition. Williamsburg is set to host its annual “Together We Play Day” Feb. 28.
Williamsburg is inviting members of other school districts to attend.
“I wanted to do more for these great students,” Hines said. “I wanted to give them an opportunity to create memories and work with other students outside of our district, teachers and students.”
The event is important to Hines and the others who have helped organize it.
“The importance of this event is to show our general population students how fun it can be to work with adaptive students plus give the adaptive students an event to look forward too,” Hines said.
Adaptive students may lack the experiences and opportunities to be active and work with others.
“We wanted to create an event where they can move, play and work with others with the same abilities,” Hines said. “We want them to make new friends and play.”
Physical activity, regardless of abilities, is important for all students to help create a healthy lifestyle.
“I strive to find ways to motivate students to be active in their everyday lives,” Hines said. “It is important, no matter the ability, to find ways to be active. Being active leads to our students being overall more healthy, and that is the goal of P.E. teachers.”
The High School will use its gym spaces to set up various games and stations with activities such as dancing, basketball and Twister.
Since the event has been made public, Hines has invited over 25 schools and hopes to reach more.
“We have a few schools interested already and in a planning phase on if they can make it happen or not,” Hines said.
The more schools that attend, the better, he said, because this event aims to provide a great experience for all.
