Williamsburg snaps losing streak as regular season nears end

A losing streak that reached eight games has ended for the Williamsburg baseball team with a 2-0 win over Center Point-Urbana in Game 2 of a WaMaC doubleheader Monday, June 19, at Center Point.
The Raiders scored both of their runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Rayce Heitman and Madox Doehrmann, and Dallon Whitehill made those runs stand up, pitching a complete game shutout. The senior righthander gave up five hits, walked one batter and struck out three.
Gavin Jensen had a pair of hits for Williamsburg and Sam Rich and Trey O’Neil, who scored the two Raider runs, singled and doubled.
CP-U won the opener 6-2 as Stormin’ Pointer ace Drake VanGorder threw shutout ball for six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four.
Both Raider runs came in the seventh inning on RBI singles by O’Neil and Cael Moore.
O’Neil took the loss, giving up three earned runs six hits. He walked three batters, plunked two others and struck out eight.
GO 2-2 REST OF WEEK
After splitting games with CP-U, Williamsburg got swept by Marion in a WaMaC twin bill at home Thursday, June 22, 4-1 and 5-0.
The Raiders bounced back from those losses to win 8-5 at Washington Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, beat South Winneshiek in their own tournament, 7-2.
Individual statistics from those games were not available by press deadline.
Williamsburg (17-16) ends the final week of the regular season with games June 26 against Clear Creek Amana, June 28 against Dike-New Hartford and June 29 against Van Meter.
The Raider will face either Des Moines Christian or East Marshall in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A District 7 tournament Wednesday, July 5, at Pleasantville.
