Williamsburg totals 4 all-state selections
Seven area selections in Class 1A

Fresh off their third straight 3A championship, three Williamsburg softball players received first team all-state honors in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state teams released Monday night.
Jersey Metz, most recently named 3A all-tournament captain, was one of the Raiders’ three first team selections. Metz finished the season 21-5 on the mound with a 2.03 ERA and 99 strikeouts, while batting .356 with 33 RBIs.
Makenna Hughes and Alley Gorsh were the Raiders’ other two selections. Both played pivotal roles in the Raiders’ state tournament run, which ended with a 3-2 win over Dubuque Wahlert in the state championship game.
Hughes batted .432 in the leadoff spot, while stealing a school record 62 bases and scoring a team-high 57 runs. Gorsh led the Raiders in average (.469), hits (60) and RBIs (48).
Sophomore Taylor Sanchez was a second team selection, giving the Raiders four total honorees. Sanchez batted .431 with 41 RBIs.
Williamsburg coach Adam Berte was named 3A coach of the year.
In Class 1A, seven seniors garnered all-state honors: two on the second team, two on the third team and three honorable mention selections.
Sigourney’s Josephine Moore was the lone player in the South Iowa Cedar League on the first team.
On the second team were English Valleys’ Taylor Mikesell and Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel.
Mikesell batted .491 with 26 hits as the team’s catcher. Lydia Kriegel batted .464, with a team high 25 RBIs and totaled 142 strikeouts as the Tigers’ primary pitcher.
On the third team were HLV-TC’s Ayla Hall and BGM’s Karagyn Minnaert.
Hall stole 28 bases, scored a SICL high 46 runs, and batted .423 with 23 RBIs. Minnaert totaled 25 RBIs for the Bears with a .380 average.
