MARENGO — “Win this pitch.”
That’s what BGM coach Jake Tibbetts tells his players in almost every at-bat from the third base side.
It is a mantra his players follow.
“It’s a pretty good philosophy, and that’s what works for us,“ senior catcher Tucker Wright said. ”One pitch at a time. One game at a time. I don’t like to look ahead.“
Wright won more pitches then he lost Friday, going three for five at the plate with four runs batted in, in a decisive 12-3 win over Iowa Valley.
Through four games this season, Wright is now batting .500 with eight total RBIs.
“Honestly, I don’t like to look at stats,“ Wright said on his hot start to the season. ”I just trust my teammates and trust my swing.“
BGM jumped to an early lead and never looked back, capitalizing on a few errors in the first inning.
Wright hit a two-RBI double, and BGM led 2-1 after one.
A four-run inning would follow for the Bears. Beau Burns, Wright and Dakota Heishman all had RBI hits in the inning.
Heishman added another RBI hit in the fourth, and Cayson Ahcenbach knocked in two more in the inning to total the Bears nine RBIs in the game.
On the mound, Jacksyn Bullers pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run and two hits while striking out eight. Bullers was able to get out of several jams in the game.
“That was a really good win,” Tibbetts said. “We got off to a good start, ran bases really well and executed the small things really good.”
BGM moved to 3-1 following the win and 2-0 in conference play and will look to carry the momentum into a five-game week.
“It’s all about trust, and I think we still got a long ways to go,” said Wright. “We can still get better.”
“We knew this was going to be a tough week for us,” Tibbetts added. “We played two tough teams, and 2-0 in the conference is a good place to be.”
Layne Peska stole two bases in the game for Iowa Valley, leading to two scores.
A flyout error in the first brought Peska home, and an RBI double from Caleb Haack in the third inning.
The Tigers’ three pitchers totaled 17 strikeouts out of their 21 total outs in the game.
