A new school year comes with new teachers
The new middle and high school guidance counselor for New London schools shares about herself

MT PLEASANT — It’s that time of year again, teachers and families are preparing for a new school year. Take some time to get to know the newest teachers to the area.
Jackie Housman
Jackie Housman is excited to begin her new adventure as the guidance counselor for the New London middle and high school students.
She also will coach varsity volleyball.
As a New London High School graduate and lifelong resident, Housman feels this is her opportunity to give back to the community that gave her, her start.
Housman lives with her husband Josh and two children Macklynn, 8, and Jack, 6, in the town she grew up in with their dog, Kip.
About Life Outside of School
What is one of your hidden talents?
I can sew. I love to read and I love to play golf and volleyball.
What is your dream vacation?
anywhere on a beach
How do you spend your summer breaks?
playing with my kids, coaching, reading
What would your last meal be?
My last meal would be steak, mashed potatoes and gravy and strawberry cheesecake.
What can you cook to perfection? Are you willing to share the recipe?

What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the First Day of School?
learn all first names the first day!
How do you show your school spirit?
I love to support and cheer on all of my students activities and wear my school colors whenever I can!
What inspires you?
my children; positive reinforcement; knowing I am helping people
What’s the best/worst thing about being a teacher?
Best thing: making a difference in the kids lives;
worst: not enough hours in the day, lots of extra hours after kids go to bed
In which other teacher’s class would you like to enroll, even for a day? Why?
Mr. White’s art classroom; I love art and am fascinated in it but I have never gotten to take a class

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
Be as involved as possible!
It helps you figure out what you love and that helps you make decisions about your future.
What’s a school sport or activity you enjoy watching?
I love all athletics!
My favorite to watch is volleyball.
My favorite to play is probably golf or volleyball

Why would you or wouldn’t you accept a Facebook friend request from a former student?
I will friend a student on Facebook as soon as they graduate if they request it.
I love seeing what they are doing and big events happening in their lives after they graduate.
How do you think students will remember you?
I would hope students remembered that I cared about them and was there for them.

I think I would be in Gryffindor house
