MT PLEASANT — It’s that time of year again, teachers, administrators and families are preparing for a new school year. Take some time to get to know the newest school staff to the area.
Angie Butler
Angie Butler is the new Director of Instruction for the Mt. Pleasant Community School District.
She has worked as a school administrator for the past five years, and has always enjoyed work with curriculum and instruction.
Butler is excited to focus on this kind of work in her new position with MPCSD.
“I am very excited to be a part of the amazing things happening in the Mount Pleasant schools,” she said. “I can already tell that I will be surrounded by educators who really care about their students and their needs, and are willing to do whatever it takes to meet those needs. Everyone I have met so far has been very warm, welcoming, and helpful as I learn my new role. It is going to be a wonderful school year!”
About You
Tell us about your family
My husband and I have lived in Burlington for the past 30 years.
We have 3 adult children who are living on their own, and a very spoiled puppy.
What is one of your hidden talents?
My degree from Iowa Wesleyan is in Art.
Painting is one way that I relax during time off from work. I am always looking for ways to be creative.
Where did you grow up?
Bettendorf, Iowa
Educational Background
From where did you graduate?
I attended Iowa State University, and graduated with my bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, and a master's degree from Morningside.
My educational leadership certifications are from University of Northern Iowa.
I am currently enrolled at UNI as a doctoral student in educational leadership, and hope to have that completed by the end of the 22-23 school year.
What experience helped you achieve this position?
I taught special education for 7 years in Burlington, Iowa, was an instructional coach in Burlington for 2 years, and I was a building level administrator at Aldo Leopold Middle School for 1 year, and the building principal at Edward Stone Middle School for 4 years.
Last year, I was the Director of Special Education for the Washington CSD in Washington Iowa.
I am also currently a Viterbo University internship supervisor and adjunct professor for the principalship program.
About this position
Do you have a motto/mission statement for why/how you approach your job?
My leadership values include having a passion for learning and growing, and supporting other people in finding their own passion for learning and growth.
Authenticity in everything I do — what you see is what you get.
Respect in all situations, regardless of what is happening, each and every individual deserves to be treated with respect.
Integrity is essential each and every day — doing what is right for the right reasons.
Synergy — learning to value collaborative work — we are all so much more effective when we work as a team.
These are the values that drive the work.
How can/will you support your building’s staff?
I worked as a special education teacher for seven years, and have a heart for working with students, families, and staff involved with special education.
As part of my new position, I will be coming alongside and supporting those engaged in what can sometimes be complex and challenging work.
Any philosophies on parent communication?
My time as a middle school principal taught me the value of frequent, ongoing communication with parents and families.
A solid partnership between school and home can really set students up for success.
If you could be a student in any class in your building, which class would it be and why?
I am excited to spend time this year in each of our buildings.
I am interested in learning more about the relatively new Ag classes at the high school, as well as some other hands-on learning opportunities we offer our students.
