MT. PLEASANT — Wednesday, Sept. 20 more buildings will open on the former Iowa Wesleyan University campus for the public to scavenger through for free stuff before closings for perimeter buildings and central campus take place soon.
While Mt. Pleasant Community School District will close on central campus sometime in November following their due diligence, not much is known about the other properties left behind from the university’s closure.
According to Doug Moore, who calls himself the “End Guy” for the post-closure happenings at IW, plans are in motion for the perimeter buildings of campus.
“They’re under contract with a closing soon,” Moore said, but stated he could not give additional information due to a confidentiality clause.
With next steps imminent, Moore is excited to invite treasure hunters back to another building, this week.
Moore was pleased with the turn out for the first two days of the event and grateful for all the items recycled as the public sifted through the Sheaffer-Trieschmann (ST) Residence Hall and Hershey Hall and said that overall, “It went great.”
After two successful Community Days which allowed the public to enter IW buildings and take items left behind last week, Moore and the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber heard the requests of many to add more days and different times for others to participate in this event.
With consideration for those seeking later hours that better fit their work schedules, Moore will open the Science Building from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20.
The same rules from the previous Community Days that participants must stop and sign a waiver before entering any buildings, no power tools are allowed, and air conditioning units are off-limits will apply to this additional date.
While there is no additional information on more dates and times to come, right now, the chamber continues to encourage those commenting on posts about the event on their Facebook page to “continue to follow his page for additional updates,” and Moore says more days will come.
“Eventually I’ll do the whole campus,” Moore said.
