Area boys basketball team’s from around Southeast Iowa began their seasons last night. Here is a look at the results.
Winfield-Mt. Union 60, Pekin 39
Winfield and Pekin were tight throughout the first quarter of Tuesday contest, but a huge 20-9 second quarter run by the Wolves was enough to give them the lead and keep it.
Pekin couldn’t find an answer, and a 17-8 run in the fourth by Winfield all but closed it out.
Winfield moves to 1-0, and Pekin 0-1.
WACO 58, Holy Trinity 29
WACO came out guns blazing in the first half on both sides of the ball. The Warriors allowed just eight points in the first half, leading 32-8 after one.
Keeping up the pressure throughout the second half the Warriors ensured their victory
Simeon Reichenback led WACO with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Hunter Hughes added 11 points and five assists. Reece Oswald chipped in 10. Cody Graber grabbed nine boards.
WACO moves to 1-0.
Mediapolis 50, Hillcrest Academy 35
Hillcrest kept it close throughout the match up trailing 14-11, 22-20, and 36-31 going into the fourth.
A 14-4 fourth quarter from the Bulldogs sealed the Ravens defeat.
Hillcrest Academy begins the season 0-1.
Wapello 58, Columbus 20
Columbus kept it close in the first quarter only trailing the Arrows 12-10, but a 21-7 second quarter and a 16-2 third quarter would be enough to see Wapello walk away with a win.
The Wildcats begin the season 0-1.
Van Buren County 49, Central Lee 42
It was a back and forth battle between the Warriors and Hawks, but after trailing 9-5 after the first quarter, Van Buren fought back for the win.
The Warriors outscored the Hawks 16-12, 15-11 and 13-10 through the second and fourth quarter.
Van Buren County starts the season 1-0.
Cardinal 45, Notre Dame 42
The Cardinal boys started their season on the right track with a victory over Burlington Notre Dame.
The Comets are now 1-0.
Mid-Prairie 66, West Liberty 20
Mid-Prairie made quick work of West Liberty in the Tuesday night season opener.
The Golden Hawks held the Comets under 10 points in all four quarters, including a 20-0 second quarter.
Carter Harmsen led Mid-Prairie with 17 points. Camron Pickard and Shawn Dodds both scored 12 apiece.
Mid-Prairie starts the season 1-0.
Belle Plaine 55, Keota 49
Keota kept the game close, but Belle Plaine came away with the victory.
The game was back and forth throughout.
At the end of the first, the Eagles led 10-6, but a 12-7 second quarter gave the Plainsmen a one-point lead going into halftime.
At the end of the third the game was tied at 33 all.
A strong fourth quarter, 22-16, by Belle Plaine secured them the win.
For Keota, Sawyer Stout led the way with 15 points. Colten Clarahan had 12 points with seven rebounds. Cole Kindred added 10.
Keota is now 1-1.
