MT. PLEASANT — This year marks 75 years of business for Becker’s Jewelers, which first opened their Mt. Pleasant location in 1948.
To give you an idea of just how impressively long they’ve been around, 1948 also saw the invention of the Frisbee and the foundation of the American Broadcasting Company.
Becker’s has now helped generations of Iowans add a little sparkle to their lives.
The store began as a family venture, founded by James Milton Becker upon his return from World War II military service. His wife, Bernice, joined the business as a certified bridal consultant.
The two were met with great success and the store expanded beyond its humble roots to encompass a second location in Burlington, Iowa.
Soon, the business blossomed into a full-service jeweler, carrying many renowned jewelry and watch brands and quickly becoming a local fixture.
Even after so much growth, the store has stayed in the family all along: it’s currently owned by Bernice and Milt’s son, Bill Becker.
Bill takes the responsibility of running the family business seriously.
“We’re upholding a special legacy here in everything we do,” Becker says. “Whether it’s for a wedding ring or a watch repair, Iowans have been counting on us for years. We want to keep that up for many more years to come.”
The local jewelry legends have some big plans to celebrate this momentous occasion.
From May 11-13, the store will host its largest sale ever, with everything in the cases up to 60% off.
Customers who make and keep an appointment to visit the store also will be entered into a drawing for a showstopping emerald and diamond ring.
“We’ve only reached this milestone because we’ve had such great customers throughout the years. So, we really wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate and give back to them,” Becker says.
With a smile, he adds: “It’s going to be fun for everyone!”
