Tuesday at 8:33 p.m. a fight of more than 20 people was reported to the Mt. Pleasant police department.
On their way to the scene at Iowa Wesleyan University officers were informed that shots had been fired, according to a news release from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department.
One unidentified 18-year-old victim was shot resulting in minor injuries.
The victim was released from the hospital the same night.
Mt. Pleasant Community School District Superintendent John Henriksen released a statement shortly before midnight stating that classes today April 13 would be canceled.
“When we were made aware it was 9:15 or so and we monitored the situation for about two hours,” Henriksen said. “We didn’t know if a suspect had been identified or brought into custody.”
Henriksen was informed shortly after calling off school that suspects were in custody.
One Iowa Wesleyan dorm was up into lockdown so that officers to search the building.
Two suspects were identified. One suspect was found quickly while the other was found a short time later, according to the police release.
The names of the suspects have not yet been released.
“We wanted to let families know as soon as possible so child care could be arranged,” Henrikson said. “And with an incident like this we knew there would be a lot of unrest the next day.”
Mt. Pleasant Community School District is taking today to prepare for the students.
Henrikson is set to meet with the district counseling team later this morning to determine how to best support the students.
“We haven’t had an experience with this before,” Henrikson said, “We’ve dealt with death or other incidents, but not this.”
Extra support is being put together for students returning to school tomorrow.
While Henrikson thinks there may be less grief involved than other situations he wanted to make sure that they would be able to support students.
“We’ll just be there.”
This story will be updated as more information is made available.
