MT. PLEASANT — Henry County Roads Department continues business as normal while looking ahead for the next year’s expenses and needs.
At the Tuesday, Jan. 2 Henry County Board of Supervisor’s meeting, the board approved a two-year bridge inspection contract with Calhoun-Burns Associates out of Des Moines.
According to the contract, secondary roads will pay a lump sum of $9,500 for the inspection of 40 structures in 2024 and a lump sum of $14,950 for the inspection of 63 structures in 2025.
All other work will be billed at an hourly rate.
In addition to squaring away this contract, County Engineer Jake Hotchkiss informed the board that his department is continuing their work on the fiscal year 25 budget and construction plan while they keep up with current maintenance and construction needs in the county.
Current work includes territory operators blading roads, hauling rock to various locations, working the boom mower in Salem, working on and replacing various signs, and even dealing with last weeks snow on paved roads.
Construction projects slow considerably in the colder weather, but Hotchkiss stated in his report to the board that “Maintenance forces continue making good progress with the clearing and grubbing operation on Franklin Avenue South of Fremont Avenue. Flaggers and roadwork ahead signs will be used as we progress through the project.”
