MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant City Council kept things short and sweet at Wednesday night’s very warm city council meeting where they discussed selling land, restricting on-street parking, and street improvements.
The council approved selling a small tract of city road right of way at the intersection of Carnahan and Courtland to the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
“The Iowa Communications Network had their connection … on Iowa University campus on a building,” City Administrator Brent Schleisman explained. “Since that's gone away, they needed a new place to put a connection station.”
According to Schleisman, this connection station will be a small fiberglass building to accommodate the fiber-optic lines that run down Courtland Street.
The small section of land needed for this station will come from an open green grass area now owned by the city.
“We don’t need all of that space and all they needed was a little 10x20 area or something like that,” he said.
The city will sell this small section of land to ICN for the cost of legal fees which total $320.
The council held the third reading of the proposed amendment that restrict on-street parking on both sides of the 100 block of South Marion Street in consideration of the addition of the 19 new living units and three double driveways added to this section of the street.
“This is actually the swimming pool road a block north of Washington Street,” Mayor Steve Brimhall clarified. “They’re building all those new properties there so, there’s going to be a lot more traffic. So, we’re going to leave the stop sign as it is and prohibit parking on the west side.”
This amendment was adopted upon the third reading.
With a motion from the council, Brimhall authorized an engineering service agreement with Warner Engineering for the reconstruction of McCoy and West Monroe Street.
“If anybody's been on those roads, they know what they're lacking,” Brimhall commented.
The council also approved an engineering service agreement with the same company for reconstruction of the “H” which included five blocks of repaving on Saunders, Henry and North Main streets.
“The section by the north side of the church is one of the roughest two blocks in town,” Brimhall said.
“Those two blocks you mentioned you mentioned of Saunders Street that run east to west are consider our top priority, right now,” council member Kent White said.
After giving the public the opportunity to speak and checking in with the members of the council, Brimhall concluded the short meeting.
