NEW LONDON — A cold January afternoon with a high of only 16 degrees got a little warmer as New London and Mt. Pleasant fire departments responded to a grass fire in the 2700 block of Oakberry Avenue in New London at approximately noon Monday, Jan. 20.
A call came across the county scanner from dispatch calling for fire support as the fire, which was thought to be contained at one point, reignited from a spark spreading to nearby dead grass. The spark caused a fire which then spread through a field moving toward a barn.
Working together New London and Mt. Pleasant fire departments contained the fire to the initial field and it did not reach the buildings reported as a concern. Officials did not report any injuries from this incident.
Personnel from Henry County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist as needed.
