MT. PLEASANT — By 5 p.m., Mt. Pleasant’s square was nearly half full, and by the time the Music on Main event officially began at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 it was overflowing with unique cars, rock music, good food, and community.
Between the variety of unique vehicles, a reunion of the Mt. Pleasant High School class of 1974, and the throwback tunes played by The Beaker Brothers Band, nostalgia was certainly alive and well in Mt. Pleasant over the weekend.
“This is a moment when the next generation pauses briefly to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of the previous one,” attendee and car enthusiast David Smith commented on the event.
Many described the weather for the evening as perfect thanks to unprecedented mild temperatures and the highly effective shade of trees in Central Park. Whether it was the cool air, lively music, or simply fun atmosphere, the event attracted many. Vice President of the 20th Century Car Club, Mike Shelangoski, heard of 250 rides showing up to line the streets around the Mt. Pleasant square.
As The Beaker Brothers Band paid homage to the original Jam Bands of the late 70s and early 70s, a crowd set up seats, visited, and enjoyed food served by Mt. Pleasant Noon Rotary while children played in Central Park.
Central Park will fill once again next month as Main Street Mt. Pleasant invites the community to the annual Pints in the Park event Friday, Sept. 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Main Street is currently accepting registration for participants to show off their culinary skills in the annual soup and chili cook-off. Businesses, schools, service groups, families, or other teams will compete for the opportunity to win Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice by showcasing their best soups and chili.
Others attending the event can enjoy tasting and voting for their favorites as they enjoy community and live music.
