Delicious donuts bring delight

KALONA—Fresh glazed donuts and coffee welcomed patrons back to Golden Delight Bakery in Kalona Saturday following their annual time off this winter.

Ever since 2003, the bakery kicks off their return from winter break with free donuts.

Like nearly every year before, the shop filled with smiles, conversation, and people happily snacking away on their fresh donuts.

According to owner Nathan Miller, the Amish bakery closes every year from December 31 through March.

Miller said that most Amish businesses close one day during the week, but he quickly learned that model was not best suited for the bakery.

“We use the break to check the bakery and catch up on maintenance and repairs,” Miller said. “it also gives employees and owners a chance to recharge.”

“Trying to get a work crew in, in the winter, and getting any people out here during the winter is hard in the country,” Miller said.

Golden Delight is located off the main roads on gravel, and Iowan winters do not always create the best travel conditions.

Now that Iowa is well on its way to Spring, patrons from near and far once again delight in the delicious baked goods in Kalona.

Daniel Schott from West Branch stopped by the bakery with his daughters Paisley and Sadie on their way to a weekend trip with his mom Laura.

“I like the kolaches,” Paisley said.

According to her dad, she particularly loves the one with cherry filling.

Kellen Myers, of Kalona, visits the bakery nearly every Saturday with his dad, and are very excited they are open again.

Kellen enjoys playing with handmade toys in the shop part of the bakery, and always requires some donut holes to munch on.

Kanchana Praveen and her family travel to the bakery approximately every three months all the way from Cedar Rapids to enjoy the baked goods.
