MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant City Council approved three ordinance amendments during its July 23 meeting, making changes to parking regulations, traffic control signage, and speed limits in key areas of the city.
Council members voted unanimously to ban parking along Pearl Street between North Main and North Adams streets. Officials said the change, part of a revision to Chapter 12, section 12-6 of the city code, will improve visibility and traffic flow through the neighborhood.
Without the revision parking on both sides of the street prevent the municipal utilities from gaining access when needed.
In another revision to the same section of city code, the council also gave the green light to new stop signs at the intersection of Harvest Drive and South Walnut Street. The signs will be installed for both northbound and southbound traffic as a response to concerns about safety at the busy crossing.
“Drivers are exceeding safe speeds creating safety hazards and dust-related nuisances,” the City Council Agenda Preview explained.
To further mitigate these issues, the council also voted to decrease the speed limit from 55 mph to 35 mph on South Walnut Street from Harvest Drive south to city corporate limits.
Each of the three amendments passed with unanimous support from the council.
