Volunteers play an important role in EveryStep’s ability to live out its mission in southeast Iowa. Without dedicated volunteers, EveryStep would not be able to provide care and support to our patients, clients, families and our own staff.
The EveryStep Hospice team in Mount Pleasant urgently needs volunteers to support its work in Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Van Buren and Washington counties. Some of the hospice-focused volunteer opportunities include:
- Providing companionship to patients by reading, playing cards or offering a comforting presence.
- Assisting patients and their families with chores and outdoor yardwork.
- Transporting patients to doctors’ appointments, delivering essentials or running errands.
- Singing, playing musical or instruments or playing CDs for patients’ enjoyment.
- Providing companionship to hospice patients who have served our country as Veteran-to-Veterans volunteers. These specialized volunteers talk, read and sit with patients and assist with honorary veteran recognition ceremonies.
- Offering a quiet, supportive presence during the final hours of patients’ lives as an eleventh hour volunteer. These specially trained individuals also offer companionship and support for family members.
There are many opportunities for volunteers to connect with peers, contribute to the community and enrich the lives of others.
To learn about volunteering opportunities in the communities served by the EveryStep Hospice team in Mount Pleasant, please email hospice volunteer coordinator Gwendolyn Norton at gnorton@everystep.org or visit https://www.everystep.org/volunteer/get-started.
If you or someone you know needs care or support, complete the confidential "Find Care" form at www.everystep.org/find-care. The form sends a message to EveryStep staff who then follow up with a phone call. It's a wonderful way to start a conversation and get answers with no cost or commitment. EveryStep can connect the individual to its own programs and services that may be helpful, as well as services offered by other organizations and providers in the community.
