DANVILLE — After a suspicious fire Sunday, Feb. 18, Iowa’s largest Sycamore tree’s survival remains uncertain, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are asking for information.
Geode State Park staff were informed by a visitor that the tree, located east of the creek, south of the spillway and approximately 200 yards downstream from dam, was burning. While the fire was extinguished, the tree suffered severe damage, especially to the interior base of its trunk.
“While the exact age is unknown, the sycamore is estimated to be around 350 years old, based on circumference and other measurements,” the news release informs.
With an estimated age of close to 190 years older than the state of Iowa itself, the Iowa DNR’s Big Trees of Iowa Official Spreadsheet lists the historic tree as 112 feet tall with a nearly 23-foot circumference and an average crown spread of 82.25 feet.
Unfortunately, the sycamore, identifiable by it’s massive trunk and wide spread crown with large, crooked branches, may not survive the fire, and the Iowa DNR is seeking any information about the fire.
Calling the fire suspicious, they’re asking the public to contact them with any information, but allowing those submitting tips to remain anonymous.
If anyone has information, they are encouraged to call Geode State Park at (319) 392-4601 or Henry County Sheriff’s Office at (319) 385-2712. Anonymous tips can also be texted to the sheriff’s office at (319) 931-3667.
