MT. PLEASANT — The Fellowship Cup once again will offer their take-and-go summer lunch program beginning this Monday, June 10.
“The Summer Lunch Program is something that we’ve done every year for more than 15 years now,” Fellowship Cup Director Ken Brown said. “Last year it really blew up because we serve more kids on a weekly basis than we ever had.”
According to Brown, the program served more than 200 students last summer, which he said was “good and bad.”
“It is a good thing that we can meet the need, but not so good that that many kids are in need,” Brown said. “But the community responded. We had more than enough to serve the families every week. So, we’re looking to do that again.”
To meet the continued need in the Henry County community, Brown says the Fellowship Cup will continue to rely on generous donations.
“We go through a lot of juice boxes or Capri Sun pouches on a weekly basis,” Brown said. “We give out literally hundreds of those on a weekly basis.”
Other donations Brown says would benefit the program include salty and sweet snacks like potato chips, and Nutrigrain bars.
The program will function as it did last year. Families with students under the age of 18 can stop by the Fellowship Cup every Monday June 10-Aug. 12 to pick up supplies to make their own lunches throughout the summer. Pick up is from 11:30 a.m.-12:20 p.m. at the Fellowship Cup Community Room on North Jefferson Street.
To sign up parents can tell the Fellowship Cup at (319) 385-3243 or stop by their office to fill out an application. If a family will not make it to pick up supplies, they are asked to give the program notice a week in advance.
“That way we can make sure that we’re not preparing those lunches, because it’s a lot of food that they walk out the door with,” Brown explained.
Those that miss two weeks without prior notice cannot continue to participate in the program.
