MT. PLEASANT — The season's first measurable snowfall left roads slick on Monday, Dec. 2, leading to a flurry of motor vehicle accidents and numerous calls for assistance throughout Henry County. The Henry County Sheriff's Office and Mt. Pleasant Police Department reported a busy morning as they responded to multiple incidents across the area.
According to dispatch logs, the first call for assistance came at 6:18 a.m. for a disabled vehicle on the 1200 block of 208th Street in Mt. Pleasant. By midmorning, officers had responded to seven motor vehicle accidents between Mt. Pleasant, Westwood and Wayland. Notably, a hit-and-run was reported around 12:30 p.m. on East Becky Lane in Mt. Pleasant.
The hazardous road conditions prompted urgent warnings from local authorities. The Henry County Sheriff's Office advised drivers to turn on headlights, avoid cruise control, and maintain increased following distances. "Leave early, slow down, and be patient," urged a statement from the department.
Local residents went to social media to share their own close calls during the slippery commute and warn others to drive carefully. Jeff Shelledy of New London described a chaotic scene: "Everyone be careful. I’ve already got a girl out of the ditch, and as I was doing that, a car turned onto Old 34 and went on the west side of a car going south at the stop sign."
"I watched a few people fishtailing and sliding this morning taking my kiddos to school,” another New London resident Ashley Aguilar shared. “It’s super slick in spots in town."
Law enforcement continues to emphasize the importance of safety measures, especially during the first snowfalls when drivers are adjusting to winter conditions. Among their recommendations are clearing all snow from vehicles before driving, leaving extra space for snowplows, and reducing speed to match road conditions.
