Girls Roundup: Demons stumble, Keota and Highland triumph

Fort Madison 49, Washington 18
The Demons struggled to find their way against a well rounded Fort Madison squad on Tuesday night.
Washington scored just two points in the first quarter, to the Bloodhounds 14. In the second quarter of play, Washington kept it close outscoring Fort Madison 8-7, but still trailed 21-10. The Demons only allowed eight points in the third, but struggled once against to find a basket, only scoring two points and down 29-12 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, Fort Madison would have its best quarter. Washington was outscored 20-6.
Washington falls to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Demons will return to action on Jan. 7 against Fairfield.
Highland 49, Hillcrest Academy 16
The Ravens had no answer for the Huskies on Tuesday night.
After one half, Hillcrest Academy only trailed Highland by nine, 17-8. Highland picked up the momentum in the second half limiting the Ravens to once against just eight points, while scoring 28 of its own.
Esther Hughes paced the Ravens with eight points. Malia Yoder finished with six and Lydia Beachy two.
Highland moves to 5-4 (4-2) on the season. Hillcrest Academy drops to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Winfield-Mt. Union 43, Louisa-Muscatine 29
Winfield ends 2021 on a high note with a win over unbeaten Louisa-Muscatine.
The Wolves found themselves down early, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter. That didn’t thwart the Wolves. Winfield would go on to outscore the Falcons, 41-24 over the final three quarters.
It was a balance attack for the Wolves as Keetyn Townsley, Keely Malone, and Bradie Buffington all finished with nine points. Buffington also pulled down seven rebounds. Jobey Malone chipped in eight points. Melina Oepping contributed six points and nine rebounds. Anna Anderson added two.
The Wolves will head into the new year at 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North.
Keota 51, BGM 17
Keota took care of business in all facets of the game against BGM.
The Eagles outscored the Bears 22-14 in the first half. In the second half, Keota piled it on. They outscored BGM 11-0 in the third and 18-3 in fourth.
Keota improves to 3-8 (3-4) on the season.
Mid-Prairie 56, Northeast 51
The Golden Hawks fended off the Northeast Rebels Tuesday night on the road.
Mid-Prairie had the advantage after the first half, outscoring the Rebels 32-16. A huge 21-7 third quarter by Rebels cut the Golden Hawk’s lead to two, 39-37, heading into the fourth. Mid-Prairie hung on in the fourth, winning the quarter 17-14 to secure the victory.
Maddie Nonnenmann led the Golden Hawks with 21 points.
Mid-Prairie will begin 2022, 4-3 (4-3).
West Burlington 56, Cardinal 27
Cardinal couldn’t find momentum on the offensive end in the loss to West Burlington.
The Comets were held to single digits in all fourth quarters. West Burlington outscored Cardinal, 20-8, 10-6, 12-6 and 14-7.
Cardinal ends 2021 3-7 (1-6).
Central Lee 86, New London 26
New London had no answer for Central Lee at home.
The Tiger struggled on both ends of the ball, scoring five points or less in all but one quarter, while allowing the Hawks fifteen points or more in all four quarters.
Central Lee outscored New London, 33-4, 16-12, 17-5 and 20-5.
Central Lee was led by 27 points from Macy Watkins and 24 points from Alivia Myhre.
Mylee Miller scored eight for the Tigers. Morgan Jones added six and Natalie Burden finished with five.
New London falls to 0-11 on the season.
Lone Tree 41, Columbus 40
Columbus and Lone Tree battled back and forth in the Tuesday night matchup, but the Tigers edged the Wildcats.
Columbus led 10-7 after the first quarter, but a 15-8 second quarter by the Lions would be the difference in the game. The Wildcats would go on to outscore the Lions 22-19 in the second half, but couldn’t pull out the win.
Lily Coil scored 14 points for Columbus. Libby White added 10 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds. Sera Vela finished with nine points and seven assists. Aracely Garza pulled down 12 rebounds.
Columbus ends the calendar year 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
