The Harlan-Lincoln House has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, nonprofit organization to host a presentation called Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant by writer and performer Peter Grady at Noon and again at 6:30 p.m. on Presidents Day, Feb. 17 at the Union Block Building third floor, 111 West Monroe Street, Mount Pleasant, Iowa. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities.
The show tells the story of Ulysses S. Grant — a man who knows he will soon die from inoperable throat cancer — as he works to complete his autobiography before his death. The performance uses period music, photographs and cartoons to explore Grant’s successes and failures in military, political, and civilian life. The show provides audiences with a new understanding of Ulysses S. Grant, the General and President.
Lincoln and Civil War collector Ethan Afshani will attend and showcase a few of his artifacts, including a tie owned by Ulysses S. Grant.
The event is free and open to the public.
The Harlan-Lincoln House Museum https://www.harlanlincoln.org was originally the home of Sen. James Harlan whose daughter Mary married Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of President Abraham Lincoln. The House tells the story of four generations of these two American families.
