MT. PLEASANT — With school starting this week, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office offers up some friendly safety reminders.
As students file onto buses throughout the city starting Friday morning, Aug. 23, the sheriff’s office reminds motorists to stop for buses, limit distractions, and watch for children. Additionally, motorists should slow down in school zones and watch for stop signs in crosswalks that were not present over the summer.
According to Iowa law, every vehicle must stop for a school bus when its red lights and/or its stop arm is extended when located on three lanes or less. While traveling on a four-lane road, vehicles following the bus must stop. Those in the other two lanes traveling the opposite direction do not need to stop.
The Iowa Department of Transportation reminds drivers they must stop no closer than 15 feet from the rear of the bus and remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and the school bus starts mobbing again.
Violating this law could result in the driver’s license being suspended for up to 180 days.
