MT. PLEASANT — Henry County 4-H is gearing up for a new year with a pair of open-house events at the ISU Extension office in Mt. Pleasant on Oct. 7 and 8, giving families a chance to discover what 4-H is all about.
Clover Kids Night will take place Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 6-7 p.m. for children in grades K through 3. 4-H Welcome Night follows on Wednesday, Oct. 8, also from 6 to 7 p.m., for youth in grades 4—12. Families can drop in during either night to explore activity stations, meet local club leaders, and learn how to enroll for the 2025—26 4-H year.
The open houses are free and open to all Henry County families — whether they’re longtime members or brand-new to 4-H. Organizers say the events are designed to be fun and relaxed, letting kids try hands-on activities and giving parents a chance to see what makes 4-H special.
The kickoff coincides with National 4-H Week, which runs this year from Oct. 5—11 under the theme “Beyond Ready.” Across the country, 4-H members and supporters are celebrating how the program helps young people build leadership, confidence, and practical life skills.
The Henry County ISU Extension office, located at 127 N. Main Street in Mt. Pleasant, serves as the local hub for 4-H activities throughout the year. Iowa 4-H is part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and offers programs focused on STEM, leadership, healthy living, agriculture, and the arts.
County staff hope the kickoff events will inspire more families to get involved. 4-H encourages youth to “learn by doing,” whether that means caring for animals, conducting science experiments, or leading community projects.
Anyone interested in learning more can stop by during the open-house hours or visit the Henry County Extension website or Facebook page. As National 4-H Week begins, local leaders say they’re excited to welcome a new group of young people eager to grow, lead, and make a difference.
