MT. PLEASANT — Snow and cold temperatures did not keep groups from gathering throughout Henry County to serve their communities by cleaning up outside in celebration of Earth Day, including the Henry County Democrats.
The Henry County Democrats celebrated Earth Day last Saturday with a morning of community service. Mother Nature was on full display with snow, cold and even a little sunshine as volunteers picked up trashed throughout the community.
The group gathered in downtown Mt. Pleasant at 9 a.m. for coffee and a continental breakfast before heading out to collect trash along the Walnut Street fence line of Old Threshers, the wooden playground and along alleys near downtown.
“As Democrats, we believe in walking the walk. We can advocate for good causes, but we also are willing to put in the work to benefit our communities.” said Mike Heaton, the newly elected chair of the Henry County Democratic Central Committee.
Carrie Gracey provided child care with Earth Day themed crafts while parents cared for their community.
“Picking up trash on Earth Day was a great way to give back and show respect for our planet,” mentioned Heaton.
Heaton said that there will be many more community volunteer opportunities hosted by the party in 2023.
“Henry County is known for volunteerism,” he said. “It is part of our culture here with Old Threshers, PEO and the countless service groups and churches throughout the county.”
More information about service and advocacy opportunities will be posted on Facebook and the party’s website, www.prohenrycounty.com.
