MT. PLEASANT — Sarah Berndt, Henry County’s longtime Disability Services Director, has resigned after 24 years of service, stepping down amid a statewide restructuring of Iowa’s behavioral health system.
Berndt submitted her resignation earlier than expected, Henry County Supervisor Marc Lindeen noted as he relayed her resignation to the rest of the board at the May 22 meeting.
Lindeen acknowledged that her resignation came “two weeks earlier than I thought maybe it would,” but said Berndt has worked closely with the county’s public health leadership to ensure a smooth handoff of general assistance responsibilities to Henry County Public Health.
Berndt has accepted a new position as lead director with the Iowa Primary Care Association (Iowa PCA), the agency that will oversee behavioral health services for the region that includes Henry County following the transition.
When news of Iowa PCA taking on the region arrived, Berndt expressed support, citing the organization’s track record with community health centers and its ability to streamline services under the new regional model.
“She’s been with us for 24 years, and I can say nothing but great things [about] Sarah,” Lindeen said. “She’s led us through numerous changes in mental health.”
Berndt has played a key role in the evolution of mental health and disability services in southeast Iowa. She has also served on the Iowa Mental Health and Disability Services Commission and has been involved in statewide efforts to improve access and coordination of care.
Berndt’s departure marks the end of an era for Henry County’s disability services, as the state moves toward a more centralized behavioral health structure. Her leadership and experience are expected to shape the future of care across the broader southeast Iowa region.
