Henry County Heritage Trust offer Historic Church Tour

MT. PLEASANT — Next Sunday, April 30, The Henry County Heritage Trust will offer the 2023 Historic Church Tour from 1-4 p.m.

The Heritage Trust invites history lovers to explore six historical churches in the area for $20.

According to Heritage Trust board member Pat White, attendees can begin the tour at any of the six locations and buy their tickets on site.

“Each church/chapel will tell a little bit about the history of their particular church,” White said. “Maybe have a little table of memorabilia or picture boards.”

The Heritage Trust originally scheduled this event for April of 2020, but however, the Pandemic derailed those original plans.

According to White, however, the original churches from that tour still made themselves available for this rescheduled date.

The tour will include the following six churches and chapels

Prairie Gem Church and Center M.E. Chapel

Both churches are situated in the Old Thresher’s grounds. Prairie Gem, built in 1866/1867, was moved to the Midwest Old Thresher grounds in 1974 along with the Colfax School. The M.E. Chapel, built in 1870, has become a part of the North Village.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and Congregational Church, Currently Revival Salon & Sanctuary

Located on East Washington Street, St. Michael’s was built in 1865/1866 and currently sits near the former Congregational Church which is now Revival Salon and Sanctuary.

Second Baptist Church

Visit 407 W. Saunders to view the Second Baptist church, built in 1843, which will hopefully join the list of the National Register of Historic Places soon.

Jesus es el Camino, AIC, Formerly Church of the Nazarene

At 409 E Monroe, this church is the newest on the tour with its build date in the 1940s.
