Henry County honors its veterans
New names to the memorial, a Marine Corps birthday, family activities, and an assembly will honor veterans this weekend

MT. PLEASANT — With Veterans Day this Saturday, Nov. 11, organizations throughout Henry County seek to honor those that have served in the armed forces.
Even before these events take place, 10 veterans were honored as their names were added to the Henry County Veterans Memorial in time for the holiday.
These are those names recently added:
Larry P. Meagher, Marine Corp
Ronald F. Shumaker, Marine Corp
Donal W. Tozer, Army
Joseph L. Telgren, Air Force
Joseph E. Cottrell, Marine Corp
Warren W. Vandagriff, Navy
Wesley D. Barton, Army
George L. Erickson, Navy
Paul O. Erickson, Navy
G. Robert Erickson, Navy
Mt. Pleasant VFW American Legion will host a 248th Marine Corps Birthday to celebrate this Friday, Nov. 10 with social hour form 4:30-5:30 p.m. and a cake cutting ceremony to follow.
The evening will include comments from guest speaker Jesse Howard. Special Guest Lieutenant Colonel (retired) State Senator Jeff Reichman will also attend.
This event is open to all. Membership is not required for the evening.
Winfield-Mt. Union Community Schools will host a Veterans Day assembly Nov. 10 at 9:30 a.m. in their high school gym.
In addition to the assembly, they will honor veterans by hanging wall decorations complete with submitted names.
Light refreshments and treats will follow in the lobby.
Henry County Sheriff’s Office, New London Police Department, and the VFW Auxiliary will honor the holiday by putting together child identification kits, offering handouts for kids and parents, and providing a free lunch in the gym lobby of the New London School.
Weather permitting, they will also have patrol vehicle on hand for kids to observe.
The community may participate in this celebration Saturday, Nov. 11 from 1-3 p.m.
