MT. PLEASANT — Tuesday afternoon, candidates on the Republican ticket helped celebrate the opening of the Henry County Republicans’ headquarters during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks started her 20-county tour by cutting the ribbon outside of the headquarters.
State House Candidate Taylor Collins, State Sen. Mark Lofgren, State Sen. Adrian Dickey, and State Rep. Jeff Shipley all attended the event and spoke briefly to encourage the community to vote, volunteer, and forward the candidacies of the Republicans on the ticket.
Lofgren is not currently up for re-election, however, due to redistricting he is meeting some new constituents in the rural Henry County area.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all of you,” Lofgren said. “I have a fundraiser in Wapello on Sept. first and doors open at 4:30 and it goes from 5 to 6:30.”
“I’m having it there because it is centrally located with my district,” he said. “I want everybody from all four counties to be able to make it here personally.”
Each candidate addressed the redistricting by defining where their new districts now reside.
According to the dedicated volunteer Jodi Collora, the headquarters are meant to be a space for campaigning, phone calls, meet and greets, and most importantly, education.
“We want people to come in and learn things,” she said. “We want to educate. We’re all Americans. I would hope this is a source of learning more about our candidates.”
According to Collora, Shipley is the only candidate running against another, that being Democrat Mike Heaton.
The headquarter’s hours are from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Collora made mention that volunteers to would be essential and invites those interested to stop in and sign up for a time slot.
