With the winter months now upon the Midwest, driving now becomes exponentially more dangerous.
Drivers must take extra precautions when driving in the snow and ice.
Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee gave his tips and experiences on what travelers should do in inclement weather.
For McNamee, one of the most obvious actions to take while driving in the snow is taking it slow. He says that one thing that he always tells people to remember is “go slow and avoid the tow,” something that radio host John Kuhens use to say.
The first big snow is always when the most accidents happen.
“Our first snowstorm always seems to be the worst,” McNamee said. “Everyone is driving like it’s July, and they stop at the last second or swerve at the last moment. If they would just take their time and realize that the winter driving conditions are way different from summer.”
He says it’s also important that people take their time and also follow the driving laws, as disregarding them spells disaster, especially with snow on the ground.
As far as equipment goes, McNamee says that making sure all your equipment is up to par and can withstand the cold.
“Making sure all your equipment is in order is important, like tires, turn signals, break lights, headlights, all that kind of stuff,” he said. “If that stuff isn’t working right, then your kinda behind the eight ball to begin with.”
He also recommend that people keep helpful items inside the vehicle as a precaution.
“During the winter, maybe carry a blanket, an extra water bottle and snacks, just in case you get stranded,” McNamee said. “Make sure you phone is charged or have an extra charger.”
Making a card with emergency numbers is another helpful tool people can use to know who to call for help.
He also mentioned, if you don’t have to travel, don’t.
McNamee said a lot of the time, when people get pulled over they are not dressed for the weather.
“More often than not, when we pull up on a wreck, people are wearing shorts and a T-shirt, or sweatpants and a T-shirt,” he said. “If you’re going to go out in a snowstorm, dress appropriately because if you do go off the road your life might depend on it.”
