MT. PLEASANT — While a historic home sustained damage due to a house fire Sunday evening, no injuries were reported.
Sunday evening at approximately 8:21 p.m. the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department responded to a house fire at 601 North White Street. With the help of New London Fire Department, Chief Anthony Blint reports crews got the fire under control in only a short time but fought hot spots for a couple hours following. Crews cleared the scene around 1 a.m. Monday.
“[There was] heavy fire damage to one bedroom and the porch,” Blint stated. “And water and smoke damage in the house.”
Reports from neighbors indicate the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and Blint state no cause was available to report.
The house, owned by Lois Crane, is one of historic character in the Mt. Pleasant community with Beacon records showing a build date of 1865. Member of the Crane family have lived in the home since 1945, and former President Barack Obama even spoke at the home during a visit to Mt. Pleasant in 2018.
