MT. PLEASANT — With school out for the summer and outside activities and celebrations on the rise with the nice weather, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Henry County Sheriff’s Office remind residents to follow firework ordinances.
According to Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the summer firework season began June 1, but that doesn’t mean it is open season to set off those loud sparkly objects.
Henry County ordinances state that fireworks may be set off on your own property or property that you have received permission to use. At these locations residents may set off fireworks from 9 a.m. 10 p.m. June 1-July 8. July 1, 2, 4, and 8 these hours are extended until 11 p.m.
“Keep in mind that local cities/municipalities may adopt more restrictive firework ordinances,” the Sheriff’s Office reminds the public. “If you reside within city limits, check your local laws to ensure you are legal using fireworks.”
Within the city limits of Mt. Pleasant fireworks may only be set off from June 21-July 6 from 9 a.m.- 10 p.m.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office encourages those with complaints about fireworks used outside of legal dates and hours to contact the non-emergency number (319) 385-2712. As a reminder, calls should not be made to 911 for other issues such as debris landing in yards, fireworks keeping others awake, or fireworks upsetting pets.
People should call 911 if fireworks set a structure on fire, someone is seriously injured, or other issues needing an immediate response from emergency services.
