The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team faced a tough non-conference opponent in Tuesday night's match. The Tigers hosted the University of Dubuque, who entered the night with 12 wins already this season. IW did not have an answer to the Spartan offensive attack and fell in three straight sets.
Iowa Wesleyan found themselves facing a 3-0 deficit early in the first set, but Lida Landre put down a kill to stop the run and put IW on the board. She had back to back kills to bring the score to 5-3, but the Spartans would go on another run to extend their lead. The Tigers were able to get within two of the Dubuque lead, taking advantage of an attack error by the Spartans and then converting two kills and ending with a service ace by Lida Landre. Dubuque added to their lead and eventually took the set by a score of 25-18.
It was all Dubuque to start the second set. The Spartans jumped out to an 11-1 lead over the Tigers. Two attack errors by Dubuque brought the score to 11-3, but the Tigers were unable to keep possession. Lida Landre had back-to-back kills late in the set which brought the score to 21-11. Iowa Wesleyan scored off an attack error and two kills, one by Landre and one by Sydney Ellsworth to close out the set. They fell behind 2-0 with a 25-15 loss to the Spartans.
The Tigers trailed 4-0 early in the third set, but they did not let that slow them down. Allegra Collette started a run for Iowa Wesleyan with a kill, and after two attack errors by the Spartans, and a kill by Sydney Ellsworth, the Tigers held a 9-8 lead. Iowa Wesleyan could not maintain their lead, however, as Dubuque scored four straight points to regain the lead. They did not look back as they went on to win the third set by a score of 25-14.
Lida Landre finished with a team-high 10 kills, while Allegra Collette and Sydney Ellsworth each added four. Paige Kammerer recorded twelve assists and twelve digs to lead the Tigers.
Iowa Wesleyan will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 11 in Ruble Arena. They will return to SLIAC play when they host MacMurray College at 7 p.m. The Tigers are now 6-16 on the season.
