IW wrestling has busy weekend

The Iowa Wesleyan wrestling teams had a busy weekend with the men taking a trip to Buena Vista for the BVU Open, and the women taking part in the Jewell Duals at William Jewell College.

For the men, Caelen Shannon had the best finish for the Tigers.

Shannon walked away with a fourth-place finish at 174 pounds. He received a bye in his first round of the day. Following the bye, Shannon picked up a 14-7 decision victory in the second round before later falling by a 9-1 major decision in the third match.

He battled back, earning a 5-2 decision win, moving him to the third and fourth place match. Shannon fell 11-5 by decision, earning him the fourth place finish.

Wyatt Nelson was the other Tiger to earn a top five finish.

Nelson won his first match at 285 by fall. He then fell in his next two matches by decision 14-7 and 3-1. Nelson secured fifth place with a fall six minutes and fifty eight seconds into his last match.

The Iowa Wesleyan women faced off agasint No. 15 William Jewell College, No. 9 Baker University, Saint Mary, and No. 13 Missouri Baptist.

Alaina Sunlin at 101 was the leading Tiger, extending her undefeated streak while winning all four of her matches.

Sunlin won her first match by fall one minute and eighteen second in. She then won her next three matches by tech fall.

At 123, Zoi Smith earned a 10-0 tech fall win in her first match. Smith was then pinned in her next match before regrouping and winning 14-4 in round three. In her fourth match she was defeated by fall.

JoAnna Vanderwood was pinned in her first match at 130, but would end strong picking up two wins, a 11-0 tech fall victory and a 9-8 decision.

In the fifth round at 130, Emma Benavides fell in a 6-6 decision.

At 136 pounds, Destiny Campbell rounded out the Tigers. She picked up a 10-0 tech fall victory in round one. Campbell was defeated by fall in the third round, but would bounce back in the fourth and fifth rounds, pinning her opponent and winning 10-0.
